PlayStation NGP: Tech, Specs and More

Screen & Controls

The most striking feature of the NGP is its large 16:9, five-inch OLED touch screen display. It’s noticably larger than the iPhone’s 3.5” screen and features a resolution of 960x544. The back of the device contains a touch pad which can be used in conjunction with the screen’s touch capabilities for a unique  control experience. 

In addition to the touch controls, the NGP is the first portable gaming device to feature two analog sticks.  Sony was eager to point out that these sticks bear a closer resemblance to an console controller’s sticks than the PSP’s “nub”.  To enable motion control on the NGP, Sony has also included a three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass.  The directional pad, action & shoulder buttons all appear to be similar to the PSP.

The NGP will play games off a small proprietary flash based memory card.  This card will store the actual game, additional downloadable content and game save data.  Sony did not reveal if the NGP will have its own internal storage.

Cameras & Network Functionality

Front and rear cameras are present on the NGP, but currently, the resolution of these cameras are unknown.  The NGP has built-in Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G network capability with GPS and WiFi location service support.

Battery Life and Other Specs

Sony states that the battery life of the NGP is comparable to, if not better than, the current PSP when running early development units, so consumers can expect, at the very least, an equal amount of playtime. Additionally, Sony stands behind their decision for the NGP to exclude 3D functionality, stating that the hand-held console is still evolving within its own technology and that the NGP reflects the exact experience -- at the exact right price point -- that Sony had in mind.
